Fated (UK) Alex Verus is a diviner, able to see the future. This is impressive to most people but less so to other mages, who can do things like throw fire, disintegrate things, and fly. Right now Alex has a problem – a site’s been discovered containing an ancient and powerful relic, and lots of people are looking for a diviner to open it, including a trio of dark mages, a faction of the Council with an agenda of their own, . Fated is Jacka’s first adult novel, and the first in his ALEX VERUS urban fantasy series that now extends to seven books — and I’m looking forward to reading all of them after finding myself happily lost in the pages of this one. I just added Benedict Jacka to my must-read list. FATED is an excellent novel, a gorgeously realized world with a uniquely powerful, vulnerable protagonist. Books this good remind me why I got into the storytelling business in the first place -- Jim Butcher Jacka writes a deft thrill-ride of an urban fantasy - a stay-up-all-night read. Fated by Benedict Jacka ISBN ISBN Paperback; New York, Ny, U.s.a.: Ace, ; ISBN Alex Verus is part of a world hidden in plain sight, running a magic shop in London. And while Alex's own powers aren't as showy as some mages, he does have the advantage of foreseeing the possible future.
Benedict Jacka could have done a better job of showing Alex’s powers in action. Unfortunately, Jacka falls into a common pitfall where he spends a lot of time telling readers what is happening rather than actually showing the events. Overall, though, Fated is an enjoyable read. Alex is a witty and relatively interesting character. Fated by Benedict Jacka (published by Orbit Books) is the first in the Alex Verus series. Amazon recommended it on the back of my Ben Aaronovitch Rivers of London purchases — both comprise London-based, urban fantasy novels. Fated had a huge number of reviews, so ‘nothing ventured, nothing gained.’. Alex is a mage, a seer. He owns a shop in London and sells things like crystal balls and herbs. He tries to keep a low profile in a world with dark and light forces in the magical realm. The majority (of mages) rely on word of mouth, though younger mages use the internet.
