As it turns out, Tess is not necessarily the "night child" of the title. She discovers a year-old girl at the centre of the mystery, and this character shows such potential that she seems likely to show up in a sequel. This first novel in a series sets up a complex but logical fantasy world. Canadian Jes Battis is from Vancouver, but for the academic year , will be living in New York City and teaching at Hunter College. Jes is an academic, with a concentration in English and Pop Culture Studies, who has had two books published, one on Buffy The Vampire Slayer and one on Farscape.
